Traveling with a group of artists is different than taking a typical tour. We move at a more leisurely pace as we paint, photograph and absorb everything around us. We seek out the culture, the art, the history, the architecture & the people that make a place special. Everything is planned by our tour operators and they are with us to ensure that everything runs smoothly making a carefree vacation for us.
All Mediums: Students
are welcome to work in any medium of their choice and I will be there
to help each of you individually. At home I paint in oils and acrylics in addition
to watercolors, but I choose to demonstrate and paint in watercolors
when I travel because I just like “traveling light”. Tour Operators: I use professional “small group” owner operator tour companies that are experienced in painting trips. I know I would not like to be on a tour with 25 to 50 people herded on and off busses, so I do not work for big companies that run those types of tours. However, due to the limited number of spaces available on these trips, you need to send your deposit in as soon as possible. The tour company website listed with each tour explains all the terms and conditions and tells you how to pay your deposit and reserve your space. Flights: Flights are not included in the cost of my painting trips so you can use frequent flyer miles, or meet up with our tour after already traveling elsewhere in Europe. Please do not book your flights until you are advised that the tour is filled and is a “go”. References: I would be happy to give you the names and email addresses of students that have traveled on previous painting trips with me. Non-Painters are welcome on my painting trips. Photos below are from previous painting trips.

2012 MAUI, HAWAII January 28 and 29, 2012 Please note: This is not an all inclusive plein air painting trip like the ones described above. This is a Weekend Workshop at the Hui No'eau Visual Art Center located in the historic Baldwin Mansion in upcountry Maui. All accommodations, transportation and meals are the responsibility of the student. The art center will be handling registration. The registration fee includes the Aquabord but all other painting supplies must be supplied by the student. Escape the winter weather at home and head for Maui for a few days of rest and relaxation and while you are there, come paint watercolors of the beautiful tropical flowers with me. Tuition: $125. Hui No'eau members, and $156.
for nonmembers Registration: There is a new product called "Aquabord" that you paint on with watercolors and then seal with acrylic spray varnish, thus eliminating the need for matting and framing under glass. Aquabord is a clay surfaced board created specifically to be used with watercolor. It has the unique ability to capture the full intensity of the pigment exactly as you apply it making it possible to create very bright, bold, intense colors just like those found in the tropical flowers, and birds on Maui. Sandy will focus on the unique character of the clay surface and demonstrate techniques for both applying pigment and lifting it off. Students can bring their own photos or work from photos and templates provided by Sandy. The Aquabord will be provided but students are required to bring their own painting supplies. |

2013 Switzerland Limited to 7 participants Fee: $3,190. (plus $550. for
single room) Jackie Grandchamps, owner of French Escapade is originally from Belgium but now lives in California and France so she knows how to make you feel like a guest, not a tourist, in Europe. This will be my fifth Travel Workshop with French Escapade, and my first time to take students to Switzerland. I can't wait! All week long Jackie is our personal French-speaking
guide and chauffeur and we travel comfortably in our air-conditioned
van. Every
morning we are treated to an authentic Swiss breakfast and then we
set off with Jackie to explore and paint in a different location each
day. Along the way Jackie will teach us about the history
and culture of the places we visit. We will find lovely scenes
to paint and I will teach you tricks and techniques for capturing our
adventures in our watercolor journals or in small watercolor paintings. Day four we are off to the historic village of Rougemont to see more cute wooden chalets, an 11 century Romanesque church and learn the art of paper cutting. My friend Sonja's students loved the Swiss cows when they were here with Jackie and the mountain peaks look spectacular in the photos. The next day we explore Jaun where I understand there are ruins of a castle, (I love to paint or create ink drawings of rock ruins). But there is also a waterfall if you are not into rock ruins. Of course you can't be in Switzerland without visiting a chocolate factory so we will visit one in Jaun. On day six we will probably return to Gruyeres because there is so much to paint there, I want to see the perfectly preserved old castle. Our last full day will be spent at Lake Geneva in the town of Mountreux an exclusive Mediterranean-style resort along the shores. We can rub elbows with the rich and famous, stroll the art galleries and shops, enjoy the farmers' market or pick a spot and paint this lovely Alpine lake. Day eight is departure day and after breakfast Jackie will load our luggage and us (sometimes a tight squeeze if we have big shoppers in the group!) into the van and off we go back to the Montreux train station with wonderful memories of a glorious week on another French Escapade painting trip. For those of you wishing to visit Paris before or after this workshop French Escapade has compiled a very helpful “Paris Planner”. Beginners and non-painters are welcome to attend this workshop. I will be demonstrating in ink and watercolor working in a watercolor journal and on individual paintings. All mediums are welcome.
