There is a new product called "Aquabord" that you paint on with watercolors and then seal with acrylic spray varnish, thus eliminating the need for matting and framing under glass.  Aquabord is a clay surfaced board created specifically to be used with watercolor.  It has the unique ability to capture the full intensity of the pigment exactly as you apply it making it possible to create very bright, bold, intense colors and perfect detail, making it an ideal surface for painting flowers, birds, animals and still life.   Sandy will focus on the unique character of the clay surface and demonstrate techniques for both applying pigment and lifting it off.  Students can bring their own photos or work from photos and templates provided by Sandy.

BEGINNERS' WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP
2 day workshop
Designed for total beginners but beneficial for self-taught
painters with gaps in their knowledge of watercolor painting.

Friday and Saturday, February 17and 18, 2012 from 10:00 - 4:00 pm

University Art Center, 2601 Marconi Ave., Sacramento, California

Fee $160.00  plus $25. for paper packet.

The  goal of this workshop is to get beginners off to a good start with a solid understanding of the medium of watercolor, so they can enjoy the fun of painting. Students will finish class with a binder filled with pages of exercises, handouts and notes that they can refer to for years to come as they create their own watercolor paintings. They will also learn to properly stretch watercolor paper.  Students will practice many techniques for applying watercolor, learn the properties of watercolor pigments, learn the difference between color and value,  study basic color theory, try different  papers, and learn to correct mistakes. This is a very basic watercolor class.

Do not expect to paint a painting,  do expect to learn the basics that will enable you to paint successful watercolor paintings on your own.

April is when the iris bloom here in the valley so they will be our subject for this workshop. We will compose our paintings using source photos and live flowers. Some iris are delicate light colors, others are vibrant deep colors like the ones in this painting. We will use glazing to create the lighter colors and the dark colors will be created using granulation technique, lifting and glazing.

GRAPES, VINES AND LEAVES
2 day workshop

We will celebrate the harvest by painting watercolors of the vineyards.  Our paintings will not be landscapes however; we will focus on the vines close up as the workers view them.

Friday and Saturday, October 19 & 20, 2012  from 10:00 - 4:00 pm

University Art Center, 2601 Marconi Ave., Sacramento, California

Fee $160.00

Autumn in the vineyards is so colorful.  The leaves are beginning to turn lovely shades of red, bronze and gold, the grapes are plump and luscious.  Nature also creates fun textures in the gnarly vines and blotchy leaves.  Each student will create his or her own drawing by observing real pieces of vine and leaves and  their photos or Sandy's.  Fun painting techniques such as granulation for creating bold colors and texture, layering for adding depth, lifting to create high lights and a variety of techniques from masking, to splattering, to the "stick trick" to add texture.  This is always a fun workshop and no two paintings ever look alike.

Students may work on watercolor paper or Aquabord, Sandy will demonstrate on both surfaces.

To register call Sandy at (916) 652-4624.

AUTUMN LEAVES
Negative painting with the help of real leaves! 2 day workshop

Friday and Saturday, November 16 & 17, 2012  from 10:00 - 4:00 pm

University Art Center, 2601 Marconi Ave., Sacramento, California

Fee $160.00

Negative painting is a fun technique that can be hard to grasp without instruction.  Basically it means that you create the subject (the positive shape) by painting the background (the negative space) around it.  Using leaves as our "positive subject" we create our paintings by painting around the actual leaves.  Once you understand how this works, you can usually go on to use the negative painting technique without the crutch of an actual leaf in future paintings.  We will create the bold bright colors of autumn in this painting with layering of transparent pigments, and also granulation technique.

To register call Sandy at (916) 652-4624.
